Show the math
- Convert to base units: Concrete needed (net) 2 yd³ = 54 ft³
- Order quantity = 54 ft³ × (1 + 10%) = 59.4 ft³
- Bags = 59.4 ÷ 0.6 ft³ per 80 lb bag = 99 → 99
- Pallets = 99 ÷ 42 bags per pallet = 2.36 → 2 full + 15 loose bags
How to measure
Start with the volume of concrete you need. If you have a bag count from the bag calculator, this page converts it into pallets. The bags-per-pallet count is a typical figure, which you can override if your store sells a different configuration.
Pallets are heavy. A pallet of 80 lb bags weighs well over a ton, so check what your truck, trailer or driveway can take before the delivery arrives.
Bags per pallet
Retail listings show 42 bags of 80 lb mix and 56 bags of 60 lb mix on a pallet. 50 lb bags are commonly sold 64 to a pallet. These are typical figures, and counts vary by product and store. The calculator uses them by default and lets you enter another number.
| Bag size | Bags per pallet | Mix weight | Concrete per pallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb | 42 | 3,360 lb | 0.93 yd³ |
| 60 lb | 56 | 3,360 lb | 0.93 yd³ |
| 50 lb | 64 | 3,200 lb | 0.89 yd³ |
Worked example: 2 yd³ in 80 lb bags
- Convert to base units: Concrete needed (net) 2 yd³ = 54 ft³
- Order quantity = 54 ft³ × (1 + 10%) = 59.4 ft³
- Bags = 59.4 ÷ 0.6 ft³ per 80 lb bag = 99 → 99
- Pallets = 99 ÷ 42 bags per pallet = 2.36 → 2 full + 15 loose bags
That is 3 pallets: 99 bags of 80 lb · 2 full pallets + 15 loose bags. The result card also shows the weight of one pallet and of the whole order.
Is it worth buying by the pallet?
Stores often discount a full pallet or offer free delivery above a threshold, so a pallet of 80 lb mix can cost less per bag than buying bags off a shelf. Loose bags need to be bought individually. The cost calculator compares the whole job with a ready-mix truck, which becomes the better option as quantities approach 2 yd³.
Handling and storage
- Keep bags dry and off the ground until use. Moisture sets concrete inside the bag.
- Use a forklift or a pallet jack for deliveries. A hand cart is not enough for a full pallet.
- Store pallets on level ground and do not stack them.
- Check the date on the bag; old mix loses strength.
- Plan the pour so that you use mix within the working time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Counting pallets, not bags, and ending up with too little.
- Ignoring the weight when you pick the delivery location.
- Assuming every brand fits the same number of bags on a pallet.
- Buying exactly the bag count with no spare.
Pallets for common volumes
| Volume | Pallets | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 1 yd³ | 2 pallets | 50 bags of 80 lb · 1 full pallet + 8 loose bags |
| 2 yd³ | 3 pallets | 99 bags of 80 lb · 2 full pallets + 15 loose bags |
| 3 yd³ | 4 pallets | 149 bags of 80 lb · 3 full pallets + 23 loose bags |
| 5 yd³ | 6 pallets | 248 bags of 80 lb · 5 full pallets + 38 loose bags |
The numbers give an idea of the logistics: one cubic yard of bagged concrete is more than a pallet and about 3,600 lb of dry mix. Ask the store about delivery fees and a forklift, and whether the pallet is returnable. Unused bags stay good only while they are dry, so buy what you will use within a few weeks.
Choosing a bag size for pallet orders
Pallets of 60 lb bags hold 56 bags, and one cubic yard needs 66 bags of 60 lb · 1 full pallet + 10 loose bags. Smaller bags weigh less per lift, which is easier on your back, but you handle more of them and pay more per cubic foot. Many buyers pick the 80 lb bag for large pours and the 60 lb bag for work they do alone. Check whether the store delivers the pallet to your driveway, and whether it needs a forklift to unload.
Frequently asked questions
